Joseph Kaulfersch, TMR Sweepstakes Winner

"Triconex Technology I deem very interesting and easy to understand. The benefits and features of the Triconex triple redundant approach, for instance is one I do deem great at its performance.

"The design flexibility, simple programming diagnostics, very high safety integrity, and low maintenance costs makes it one of the many reasons why its technology is just superb.

"As for winning just makes me feel wonderful, and gives me a greater zeal to be connected with the Triconex world and whatever the future holds out there to conquer."

HOVENSA, a joint venture between a subsidiary of Hess Corporation and a subsidiary of Petroleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), operates a world-class merchant refinery in St Croix, USVI. The facility is one of the most modern refineries in the United States and, with crude oil processing capacity of 495,000 barrels per day (BPD), is one of the largest in the world.

Joseph Kaulfersch, TMR Sweepstakes Winner

"First of all, when I was told I was a winner I didn't believe it. I've never even won a lollipop in my life! Then I remembered that I had entered the drawing earlier this summer, and reading about the Ten Truths of Safety Instrumented Systems.

"Safety and Safety Instrumented Systems have always interested and intrigued me. I understand how the quality of a SIS has direct impact on a plant's performance plus how much production can be lost if a system is not available. However, the bottom line to me is if we do our jobs correctly somebody's dad or mom is going to come home for dinner tonight. That gives me the greatest satisfaction in my job. I know I may have saved someone's life today by selling them a safe product.

"We as engineers have an obligation to do the greater good for our communities and mankind in general. Safety is a philosophy. It is not arbitrary. 'Nothing is fool-proof to a sufficiently talented fool.' We as engineers, salespeople, and management have to eliminate accidents - not mitigate them - whenever possible. By using products like Triconex TMR Systems we are making this world of ours a little better place to live and work in. I am very greatful and appreciative to Triconex and Invensys for this gift. From the bottom of my heart, thank you!"

TMR Sweepstakes, True or False question answers:

  1. Will a SIL 2 safety instrumented function benefit from the use of Triconex's TMR technology?

TRUE: Absolutely, SIL 2 Safety Instrumented Functions will be not only safe but also the process will gain from the avoidance of spurious trips, meaning less chances of risk conditions and added benefit of uptime improving the overall lifecycle cost of the installation.
  2. Does a safety system in a dual platform have a higher lifecycle cost then using Triconex's TMR technology?

TRUE: Although, in appearance, the initial cost of a dual system is lower, when you factor the cost of additional programming, documentation, added instrumentation, the added complexity of maintenance that increase the cost of maintaining the system and the time of troubleshooting, and last but not least the impact of spurious trips on your plant performance, you will find TMR lifecycle costs far less than dual systems.
  3. Triconex's TMR technology can be used in SIL 2 applications?

TRUE: In fact, Triconex safety systems around the world are used more frequently in SIL 2 applications than those rated SIL 3.
