Quality of a SIS has a direct impact on plant performance.
Quality isn't always implemented the same way by every company. Quality Assurance procedures differ between vendors, regardless of product compliance with safety standards and certifications. Nevertheless, a vendor must make sure that their SIS performs to the intended specification.
One of the biggest challenges in testing fault-tolerant control systems is ensuring that an SIS will perform as intended when something fails. To address this concern, manufacturers have developed the 'Fault Insertion Process.' The printed circuit board assemblies used to construct safety instrumented systems can have up to 5,000 test points on a single board, each of which must be tested under fault conditions in multiple modes of operation.
Few companies invest sufficient resources to develop exhaustive validation and verification schemes such as Automated Fault Insertion Test Systems. In such a system, robotic testers efficiently apply up to 37,000 fault insertion tests on every board. Only one fault-tolerant control vendor performs this automated testing to such a high degree of combined unit and system coverage. By testing every known failure mode, users in the process industries are guaranteed an extremely robust hardware platform. Additionally, both the hardware platform and application software go through an extensive Verification and Validation Process, which users count on to prevent downtime and to lower their total costs throughout the system lifecycle.
Quality and Value is built into the Triconex system at every stage of the IEC 61508 process. We have created this informative 10 minute video which focuses on a few key elements in our manufacturing process.
